Scout for Life

I attended a fundraising dinner tonight for our local Boy Scout district. I participated in Scouts for much of my youth, age 11 to 17 or so. I did not achieve the Eagle rank, which I regret, but I still consider my scouting experience to be very valuable.

I know many people who disagree with scouting and it's exclusion of certain lifestyles. It is a private organization, and I think it has an important role. I'm grateful for my scouting memories, and the important things I learned. I look forward to Joseph and Isaac getting involved when they are old enough.

I didn't last long in Scouting. I think my downfall was taking a camping trip very early in the process. Hated it. Rained all weekend. Got sick, etc. If nothing else, I learned how very much I like being warm, sheltered ...and able to be moments from a fridge at all times.

I have very wonderful memories of scouting with you, your dad, and Chris. I barely made it to Eagle ... finished it the week before my 18th birthday ...

I do hope they change their stance on certain issues, but I realize certain organizations that really bolster scouting do not support that stance. So ... it is complicated ...
